Better Graphics Making High Definition TV Even More Spectacular

Every time you sit down to watch your favourite movie, television program or sporting event, you are exposed to hundreds of colourful, eye-catching representations in the form of animations, advertising and announcements. These are even more stunning when you are watching your entertainment media using an upscaling DVD player which uses the latest scientific advancements to mathematically coordinate the output from the player to the monitor’s pixellation. This gives you the clearest pictures without any distortion, blurring of action scenes or loss of colour and definition. These beautiful images, text, symbols and signs are the creation of hugely talented graphic designers who besides having studied the electronic arts long and hard, have that innate ability to select the exact combination of elements to present a specific message or feeling accurately and dynamically. Their use of shape, size, colour and other resources transform ordinary artwork into the things that compel us to be glued to our television sets for so much time. People that have connected their home entertainment systems with an HDMI cable benefit even more from their work since this accessory cuts the amount of resolution loss when analogue signals are converted to digital or when audio or video signals are compressed. The result is the much sought after sharp image and smooth action we all want and on which the graphic designers plan on when they create their incredible works of art, whether for a television show, an animated movie, an advertisement, product packaging or public service announcement.

The Art of the Colour Wheel

One of the things that is critical in the design of all forms of media like the banners, ads, logos, and navigation buttons you use every time you surf the web using your laptop is colour. Graphics on the internet have become increasingly widespread since the early 1990’s, as upload and download speeds have increased exponentially and internet browsers have acquired the capability of downloading large images. We all like to think we can match colours easily but if you check around all too often you see people who look like they haven’t looked in the mirror for years while dressing themselves. The correct selection of the right tint, hues, tones and shades is as much of an art as painting or sculpting. Graphic designers not only do this on a regular basis, they often create new colours which show up on a multitude of things you see on a high definition TV. Most of us take all these things for granted, preferring to just sit back and enjoy the brilliant images along with the great sound. But there was a lot of hard work and acquired skills put into each and every presentation we get to enjoy. This is even better for us when we put on one of the many visually exciting superhero type movies which incorporate graphics right into the real images recorded on film. With the extreme high quality of your modern DVD recorder, it is very difficult to tell the difference between real and computer generated.

Successful Integration

One of the keys to successful graphic presentation is the understanding that it is the creative amalgamation of any number of arts and media that results in the finished product, combining it with the words and phrases attached to it. Artistic graphics have been in evidence since ancient times when Egyptian, Greek, Chinese and Indian manuscripts were illustrated with colourful symbols and signs to emphasise certain important concepts. Watching broadcast programs about these on a high quality LCD TV successfully conveys both the depth of artistic ability and the critical role they played even thousands of years ago. We are fortunate enough to use the most up to date scientific advances to examine some of the earliest predecessors of today’s graphic design. In the 1400’s, the printing system using moveable type was invented by Johannes Gutenberg and this led to the spread of printing and publishing. The concept of graphic design was still in its infancy but it had begun and has never slowed its growth since. Similarly the development of the electronics industry has grown quickly and has spawned hundreds, maybe thousands of new concepts in communication, and constant improvements on the old ones. A prime example of this is the DVD player which has evolved from the now obsolete technologies of the VHS and Beta VCRs in the 1970’s and the laser discs of the 1980’s. Although they were only invented a few decades ago, the technology has improved so rapidly that it is almost hard to believe.

Newer and Better

Probably the most revolutionary step forward in the progression of high tech art forms was the introduction in the 1980’s of software used for desktop publishing exemplified best by Adobe Illustrator and Page Maker. These and other packages gave individuals the opportunity to use high level tools to design fantastic posters, newsletters, brochures and print media ads. As the precursors to HD TV developed coincidentally, the world of design and multimedia as was known was changing dramatically. While the masses learned to produce basic graphic pieces, businesses needed to differentiate themselves from their competition. Doing their own graphic design in-house is difficult and not always very productive without employing the best graphic designers available which is something that most small businesses cannot afford. A parallel can be seen in the related world of entertainment media viewing. Our lives are full of choices the same as businesses are. We have the choice of buying a big TV to give ourselves and our families the ultimate pleasure of audio visual perfection right at home in our living rooms. We consider price, quality, and how it will look in the room. Perhaps our first thought is to go cheap even though we know we really will benefit more by making the more expensive purchase. While we may save money buying the small TV we know that the larger one will bring more satisfaction. The same is true of graphic designers. Having professionals do your creative work will provide the results and satisfaction you seek.
